Craigellachie 13 Years Speyside Single Malt

Oily malt arrives first on the nose, followed by barbecue pineapple and summer berries, with a very soft hint of sulphur hiding behind biscuit and apple notes; the palate is punchy and oily, with honeyed malt and vanilla meeting sharp citrus and lime, then a meaty, robust mid-palate of salted butter, liquorice and milk chocolate, finishing dry with white pepper and wet chalk. This singular character comes from the distillery's worm tub condensers — spirit vapour cooled through coiled copper pipes submerged in cold water, giving far less copper contact than modern condensers and a heavier sulphur note. Thirteen years in bourbon and sherry casks transforms that sulphur into savoury, meaty depth — a deliberate departure from typical polished Speyside style.
